Pick Out Your Stones
1 Samuel 17:40
Intro:
~ Perhaps the greatest Bible champion of all time is this one! David was said to have slain his tens of thousands and Saul his thousands. A Champion amongst men!
~ He is a man we can look up to and find strength in the Lord through his words.
~ He showed us he is merely a sinful man when he murdered Uriah and committed adultery with Bathsheba.
~ Yet we saw the tender mercies of God and His wonderful Grace when He protected and sheltered David His servant
~ God calls him a man after His own heart:
God looks for another because of the disobedience of Saul –
1Sa 13:14 But now thy kingdom shall not continue: the LORD hath sought him a man after his own heart, and the LORD hath commanded him to be captain over his people, because thou hast not kept that which the LORD commanded thee.
And says this:
Act 13:22 And when he had removed him, he raised up unto them David to be their king; to whom also he gave testimony, and said, I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after mine own heart, which shall fulfil all my will.
~ My Interest this day is the stones that he finds in the brook
Smooth Stones
Body:
1. David’s Concern – v. 23b “and David heard them”
A. The Brothers v. 22b
Gal 6:2 Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.
Pro 27:17 Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend.
B. The Berating v. 26
1Pe 3:9 Not rendering evil for evil, or railing for railing: but contrariwise blessing; knowing that ye are thereunto called, that ye should inherit a blessing.
Rom 12:17 Recompense to no man evil for evil. Provide things honest in the sight of all men.
Rom 12:18 If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men.
Rom 12:19 Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rathergive place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.
Rom 12:20 Therefore if thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink: for in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire on his head.
Rom 12:21 Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.
C. The Boasting v. 28-30
2Co 10:13 But we will not boast of things without our measure, but according to the measure of the rule which God hath distributed to us, a measure to reach even unto you.
2Co 10:14 For we stretch not ourselves beyond our measure, as though we reached not unto you: for we are come as far as to you also in preaching the gospel of Christ:
2Co 10:15 Not boasting of things without our measure, that is, of other men's labours; but having hope, when your faith is increased, that we shall be enlarged by you according to our rule abundantly,
2Co 10:16 To preach the gospel in the regions beyond you, and not to boast in another man's line of things made ready to our hand.
2Co 10:17 But he that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord.
2Co 10:18 For not he that commendeth himself is approved, but whom the Lord commendeth.
2. David’s Commitment – v. 32
A. Always Running – v. 17, 20, 22, 48
~ Told to run by his father in v. 17
Heb 12:1 Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,
Heb 12:2 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.
1Co 9:24 Know ye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize? So run, that ye may obtain.
B. Always Ready – v. 34, 35, 40
~ Has His Staff, Sling, Scrip
1Pe 3:15 But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear:
Col 4:6 Let your speech be alway with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man.
Psa 119:42 So shall I have wherewith to answer him that reproacheth me: for I trust in thy word.
3. David’s Choice – v. 40
~ He didn’t just take the first thing that came his way
~ He didn’t just take the any stones
A. Stones That Formed in the Brook
~ Stones are made smooth by the current which drags them through the water
~ The beat everything, they pass by
~ Everything that passes by them beats them
~ Before too long they are made into smooth stones that are strong and usable
Psa 27:14 Wait on the LORD: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the LORD.
B. Stones That Fit in the Bag
~ His bag was undoubtably smaller then Goliath’s
~ His bag wasn’t unfamiliar to him
Php 4:19 But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.
C. Stones That Flew in the Direction thrown
Rough Stones
~ A stone that isn’t smooth has jagged edges
~ Those edges catch and break
~ They tumble this way and that way without a clear direction
~ They snag anything they come in contact with
~ They aren’t good for throwing
Isa 11:2 And the spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD;
Isa 11:3 And shall make him of quick understanding in the fear of the LORD: and he shall not judge after the sight of his eyes, neither reprove after the hearing of his ears:
Isa 11:4 But with righteousness shall he judge the poor, and reprove with equity for the meek of the earth: and he shall smite the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips shall he slay the wicked.
4. David’s Cry – v. 45
A. Your Way
~ Swords, Spears, Shields
2Co 10:4 (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;)
B. Yahweh – Too Sacred To Be Spoken
~ This is the name of a Personal God!
~ David is saying this isn’t a battle against him but against His God!
Eph 6:12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.
Zec 4:6 Then he answered and spake unto me, saying, This is the word of the LORD unto Zerubbabel, saying, Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the LORD of hosts.
Exo 15:3 The LORD is a man of war: the LORD is his name.
5. David’s Cast – v. 49
A. Started In The Hand
Ecc 9:10 Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest.
B. Strengthened in the Heave
Neh 6:9 For they all made us afraid, saying, Their hands shall be weakened from the work, that it be not done. Now therefore, O God, strengthen my hands.
Isa 59:1 Behold, the LORD'S hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; neither his ear heavy, that it cannot hear:
Isa 59:2 But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear.
Isa 41:13 For I the LORD thy God will hold thy right hand, saying unto thee, Fear not; I will help thee.

C. Sunk In The Head
Psa 119:11 Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.
Psa 40:8 I delight to do thy will, O my God: yea, thy law iswithin my heart.
Psa 37:31 The law of his God is in his heart; none of his steps shall slide.
Heb 2:1 Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard, lest at any time we should let them slip.
Heb 2:2 For if the word spoken by angels was stedfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just recompence of reward;
Heb 2:3 How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him;
6. David’s Conquest – v.50-51
~ David Conquers the Philistines by eliminating the Champion
A. Started In Action – v.20 “rose up early…and left… and went…”
~ He Obeyed
Joh 18:11 Then said Jesus unto Peter, Put up thy sword into the sheath: the cup which my Father hath given me, shall I not drink it?
B. Sought the Almighty
~ v.45 “In The Name”
Mat 6:33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.
C. Stood in Adversity
Eph 6:11 Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.
Conclusion:
~ You cannot fight a battle and win without first picking up your stones
Pick Out Your Stones and prepare wisely!
God will fight the battles of those who are willing to prepare!
